Qatar Convention Centre is a spectacle that is expected to be the largest convention centre in the Middle East, with facilities including a 2,500 seat theatre, an exhibition halls and banqueting facilities for major functions.
An architectural showpieces of Qatar's Education City, the building's conceptual design is by celebrated Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. He has incorporated a huge organic tree-like structure in the main façade, symbolizing the Sidra tree, a beloved icon in Qatari history and culture and also the emblem of the client. Design and engineering of this 250m long and 20m high signature entrance structure has been a challenge on several fronts: geometric rationalisation, engineering as well as fabrication. The challenges are associated with free-form shape, size (with upto 7m trunk diameter), and major forces running in the structure, roof and the base of the tree. The tree is wholly made of steel, and supports a complex steel plate girder and tie-bar system that supports the concrete roof. رد |
