Doha MasterPlan

Metropolitan Workshop was invited to take part in this exciting competition by the Norplan group, With NSW Arkitekter & Planleggere as the lead architect.
The competition brief asked that the population of the city of Doha is increased from 500,000 inhabitants to around 2 million over the next 15-20 years. The challenge has been to create a sustainable city for the future. Our team have put forward a proposal for green links tying together the city and providing much needed recreational facilities, a top notch new public transport network, and some major infrastructural changes to remove traffic from central Doha and thus freeing up the waterfront.
The centrepiece of the proposal is a large new park, comparable to Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. The park acts as a showcase for Sport, Leisure, Culture, and Health Tourism together with a new governmental complex. The park will act as a green oasis within the country and become a symbol for the new and dynamic city.

New Park

The concept of the new park is exciting and much needed. The current situation in Doha, at least with the Corniche, is that single men, especially those who are not Western-expats are not permitted to enter the park on Fridays before 6PM. Friday is the only day off for most people, especially for those who come from South Asia. If current situation remains, the park of the future will fail. It will not be like Central Park in New York, which from its inception was meant for ALL to enjoy.
