Consult Maunsell appointed to design the 5th Crossing Bridge in Dubai

5th Crossing

Roads Transport Authority has appointed Cansult Maunsell to undertake preliminary study, preliminary design, detailed design, tender documentation and construction supervision of the two prestigious bridges over Dubai Creek known as Shandagah Crossing and 5th Crossing (Sheraton Crossing).

Shandagah Crossing

Upgrade, modification and evaluation of existing Al Shandagah Tunnel, including the required interchanges and intersections that may be required at the existing and proposed intersections between Omar Bin Al Khatab Road and Sheikh Rashid Road, passing through Dubai's central business district. The overall corridor section extends approximately 6.3 km. The new Shandagah Crossing is to provide for six travel lanes in each direction, with a total of 12 lanes.

5th Crossing (Sheraton Crossing)

Modification and design of a new corridor including all required interchanges and intersections that may be required at the existing and proposed intersections. The concerned area extends over approximately 0.5 km, crossing the Dubai Creek and connecting between Deira and Bur Dubai in the area of the Sheraton Deira Hotel. Similar to the Shandagah Crossing, the 5thCrossing also accommodates six lanes in each direction.
The total estimated construction cost for the two crossings will be Dhs.2.5 bBillion.

Signature Bridges

The general project is underpinned by the Creek Bridges which link the corridors of the Deira and Bur Dubai areas. These signature bridges are unique in form and scale. Their architectural impact reflects the history of Dubai and the sails of a Dhow. The complex engineering detail of the steel plate sails are totally in tension to ensure functional as well as aesthetic forms.

The 5th Crossing (Sheraton), will encompass a viewing platform soaring high above the creek and overlooking the city. The sunset views platform will be a significant feature and tourist attraction. No less impacting will be the “Gateway” Bridge, Al Shandagha.

The first and last view of visitors flying into and out of Dubai will be this bridge. A gateway in its purest form. During the day the sails will reflect the ambient sea and sky patterns and the same sails that will be illuminated by atmospheric lighting will be a truly memorable nightscape.

The bridges are an eclectic reflection of Dubai's history and its innovative and progressive approach to providing a functional yet exciting utility.

Foster won the competition

seems that foster + partners won the competition of the bridges. The news are not confirmed, but but rumors from Dubai are confirming that. the public are requesting to have a public consultation for the choice of the bridge, especially at this credit crunch period.
Foster were mainly competing against ZAHA Hadid, NOX and others.
