With its occasional lush stretches, it is a unique natural and geographical feature in the dry central highlands of Saudi Arabia. It is also a natural drainage course for surface water for a very large area, fed by a number of tributaries. Wadi Hanifah's entire drainage run-off area covers approximately 4,000 square kilometres.
